10th April 06 - Making It Better makes a donation to the King's Starfish Appeal

On Monday, 10th April we were very pleased to be able to present a cheque for £500 to the King's College Hospital Starfish Appeal. The Starfish Appeal aims to raise £1 million towards the total needed to refurbish the Mountbatten Ward - the Paediatric Liver Unit in Kings College Hospital. This Unit, the largest in the world, has some 3,000 admissions a year and performs an annual average of 45 paediatric liver transplants - sometimes as many as 60. However, this world-leading medical unit is in urgent need of expansion and modernisation. The ward was originally built in the early 1980s, as a state of the art pediatric liver unit- the only one of it's kind in the UK. But now, 20 years on, it is looking tired and overcrowded and in need of updating.

We are delighted to be able to support this important appeal as a way of thanking the Liver Team at King's for all the help and expertise they gave to Daniel prior to his referral to Birmingham Children's Hospital. Children with liver disease often spend weeks or months in hospital. For some children, like Daniel, hospital is their home... and we know from personal experience how important it is for the wards to be as cheerful, comfortable and welcoming as possible. We hope that we will able to make a similar donation to the Appeal next year.

Our cheque was received by Professor Anil Dhawan and we featured in the South London Press on Friday 15th April.
