new centre for small bowel transplants formed by King's and Great Ormond Street
22 October 09 - New bowel transplant centre
Specialist medical and surgical teams at King's College Hospital and Great Ormond Street have joined forces to create a new small bowel transplant centre, the first of it's kind in London.
Dr Neil Shah, consultant paediatric gastroenterologist at GOSH and Patron of Daniel's Charity commented:
'We are seeing increasingly complex cases, and with limited services available to these patients there is a real demand for this centre. Given the excellence of the Gastroenterology and liver units at both Kings and GOSH, we all believe this will be a fantastic working collaboration with huge patient benefits.
Although not all children referred to us with intestinal failure will have a transplant, for those who do it will be potentially life-changing.'
Consultant surgeon and director of the transplant programme at Kings, Professor Nigel Heaton, added:
"This is an exciting development for Kings and GOSH. It has the potential to dramatically improve the lives of children in London and the south of England with this complicated and disabling condition. This is a massive step forward for both Kings and GOSH.'
The new centre carried out it's first successful bowel tranplant in August and offers hope for the increasing number of patients who have intestinal failure and are reliant on intravenous feeding.
Daniel was lucky to have received two transplants in his short lifetime. As Daniel's family we will always be grateful to two very special families who gave Daniel such an incredible gift. Raising awareness of the need for more people to sign the Organ Donor Register is very important to us.
