13 January 08 - Gordon Brown Backs Presumed Consent For Organ Donation

There's lots of media coverage today on the presumed consent organ donor system which is being backed by Gordon Brown.

We were woken up this morning by a call from Sky News asking us if we would like to be interviewed on the subject - live on Sky News at Lunch time today!! Mark readily agreed. Mark was also asked if he would take part in a panel debate with the Patient Concern group around the subject. He felt that he didn't have enough time to prepare. However, we got in touch with Colin Prior at the Lewis Prior Foundation who very bravely agreed that he would take part (Hats off to Colin!!). He was due to appear live at 1.30 but unfortunately, due to a problem with the Film Crew at Birmingham the interview couldn't take place.

So, whilst neither Mark nor Colin got the chance to put their point of view forward, it is great that presumed consent is once more in the public eye and backed by our Prime Minister. It is headline news across some of the media today - here's some links:

For more information on the three different organ donor systems: opt-in, opt out and required request then check out the BBC's highly informative organ donation website. If you are in favour of having an opt-out system in the UK you can add your name to the e-petition and the Opt Out Campaign both of which are calling for a change in the law. The debate goes on...
